After many years, I am finally catching up on a lot of music that I have missed. It also helps to have time to actually listen to music, instead of work in the music business. When I found this recording, I was intrigued. What did the young Dave Matthews sound like in 1996 all by himself? Since I am a year younger than Dave I was expected a little raw, emotionally honest, and just a bit nervous performance. Just like a young man in his 20's trying to please everyone, but not quite confident enough to just enjoy the moment. This recording was all of that aesthetically. The guitar playing (which what grabbed my attention in 1994 and made me a lifelong fan,) is nuanced and driven. His vocals are youthful. There is a bare honesty to them. Then there is the nervous chatter between songs... "what do I say, without sounding pretentious?". This is why, I love this recording. I can take this musical trip to 1996 with Dave and reminisce to what life was like when I was 27. Each song is a postcard from that time. It is an experience captured in that moment to be enjoyed with the same honesty as it was played, but we get to listen to it again and again. This is why I love the Dave Matthews (Band) experience. We are invited into the music making experience far differently than other artists. This recording is no different, just a bit more intimate.
